There are many kinds of green, eco, recyclable products today. However, According Mintel, market reserch company showed that only 12 % of US adults say they buy green products regularly, and 68% are buying them sometimes. The main reason is high price than regular products.

What are the criteria of eco-friendly product? Are there some rules to prevent greenwashing? ISO (International Organization for Standardization) 1400 series regulate environmental pollution and waste when a product is produced. ISO was founded on 23 February 1947. There is headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. ISO is a non-governmental and non-profit organization. It has ability to set standards that often become law.

If organization wants to obtain ISO standard, they are required to submit technical information (e.g. test reports, evidence of compliance) with the law/regulations to ISO. Then it is assessed by investigator such as scientist. If it is approved, the organization needs to pay licensing fees for permission to use the eco-label symbol for three years. They are also required annual follow-up assessments to maintain certification.

It is important to know which claims you can trust and which one is can't. Without guiding standards and investigation, consumers may not be sure that the product present natural, recyclable, eco-friendly, low energy, recycled content, etc is actually environmentally preferable alternative goods. The product under the ISO is reliable. That product built consumer’s environmental awareness and provides environmentally beneficial actions.

Most of people are worker or student and they spend most of time in the office or school. These organizations such as company and school can buy many amount of green product at once, so they buy these products at lower price than we buy them at shop. Actually, I got coffee with eco product cup at cheap price at KCC. If organization such as company and school’s behavior is changed, a large number of people's environmental awareness concerning to buy eco-goods are increase. Therefore, If the company and school substitute conventional product to green product, we can make a difference for the environment for example, we can reduce toxic gas emission and garbage.

The problems of Greenwashing for the environment

green_paint.jpg
By davidcoethica
We are now facing serious environmental problems. Many companies are committed to solve global warming, deforestation, reducing garbage, and toxic chemicals. They often use multi-million dollars to offer the eco-friendly products and more and more companies which advertise environmentally friendly goods and services are increasing. However, generally, these advertising campaigns are too exaggerated. For example, they say “to buy our products, you can stop the global warming, deforestation, creating garbage and toxic chemicals. They actually conceal the fact that environmentally harmful.

Companies disingenuously declare their products and policies as environmentally friendly, such as by presenting cost cuts as reduction of resources. It is a deceptive use of green PR and deceive the advertisement as a “environment-friendly". This is called “greenwashing” This word greenwashing has actually came from word whitewashing. It means "trick". It is a one marketing strategies to push the eco-friendly for the companies even if it’s not working for the environment.

(cc) 98% of Products Green Clams Are Misleading - April 18, 2009 by terrachoice

The greenwashing is not a new phenomenon. In the 1970s, the growth of the environmental movement brought awareness of ecological damage to the general public. Green advertising has increased almost tenfold in the last 20 years and has nearly tripled since 2006. There are more than 18,000 advertisements. According the survey of “terrachoice”, 98% of products’ green claims are misleading.

We want to know whether the advertisement that written eco-friendly is true. But The volume of suspicious and misleading advertisements are increasing. Moreover, there are gap of the consciousness between the company and consumers. The consumers are confusing whether the advertisement is really good for the environment to only using words and images of the company’s advertisement. These advertisements can’t contribute to protecting our environment and the consumers cannot do action just to see environmental advertisement, because it is difficult to raise every consumer’s awareness of the environmental protection from these suspicious greenwash advertisements.

Another enviromantal problem is that companies need transportation to carry these advertisement. Transportation emit toxic gas like CO2. It is bad for the environment. It means they waste huge energies and pollute the environment. Also, they produce plenty of garbage to present eco-advertisements.Therefore, these behaviors are very bad cycle and bad for the environment.

Summary and Evaluation of Source:

1. We are now facing serious environmental problems. Many companies are committed to making the world a better to solve global warming, halt deforestation, prevent the destruction of the oceans, and end the proliferation of toxic chemicals. The companies advertising about environmentally friendly goods and services. They often use multi-million dollars, but these advertising campaigns are too exaggerate. They say to buy our products, and you will end global warming, improve air quality, and save the oceans. Actually, they conceal corporate behavior that is environmentally harmful by any standard. Companies disingenuously declare their products and policies as environmentally friendly, such as by presenting cost cuts as reductions in use of resources. It is a deceptive use of green PR.
In short, deceive by the word environment-friendly". This is called “greenwashing”This word greenwash has actually come from word whitewashing. It means "trick".
Even if companies think that it is good intention for eco-friendly or green, consequentially becomes greenwash. It is also called greenwashing.

1-Evaluate
I didn’t know “greenwashing” but I can understand the status and how affects with us to browse it.
I found out that most companies propose “green”. It is a one marketing strategies for the companies even if it’s not working for the environment.
This is created by organization (.org), so I think I can trust the information. There are a lot of basic facts covering advertisement and environment.

2. It is difficult to tell the differences whether the company’ proposal is genuine or not. The greenwashing is not new phenomenon. In the 1970s, the growth of the environmental movement brought awareness of ecological damage to the general public. Greenpeace (a non-governmental organization for the protection and conservation of the environment. Greenpeace uses direct action, lobbying and research to achieve its goals. Greenpeace has a worldwide presence with national and regional offices in 46 countries) wants corporations must play a central, essential role in helping to solve the world's environmental challenges and ending their destructive policies and by waking up to the economic benefits of environmentally sustainable practices and products.
Green advertising has increased almost tenfold in nthe last 20 years and has nearly tripled since 2006. There are more than 18,000 advertiments.
Consumers want to know the right thing but suspicious of misleading claims were increasing.

2-Evaluate
Some companies trying to solve greenwashing. Greenpeace is trying to cope with greenwashing. There are criteria that Greenpeace use to investigate. Greenwashing is prevented for the company and criteria but is difficult to solve it. Greenpease is the worldwide trusted company.
This is also created by organization(.org) so,I can believe this information.
